Macron Believes Trump's Statements Undermine NATO

During his visit to Seoul, French President Emmanuel Macron made a significant statement asserting that U.S. President Donald Trump's actions weaken the North Atlantic Alliance. Macron emphasized that Trump's public criticism of NATO and doubts regarding Washington's commitment to transatlantic partnership negatively affect trust among allies.

During his recent visit to Seoul, French President Emmanuel Macron made a crucial statement regarding the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's rhetoric on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Macron expressed concern that Trump's public criticisms of the alliance, along with his skepticism about Washington's dedication to transatlantic partnerships, are detrimental to the trust that underpins the relationship among NATO allies.

This information was reported by Bloomberg and the Ukrainian publication 'European Truth.' Macron highlighted that alliances such as NATO are fundamentally based on trust, which serves as their foundation. He stated, 'Such alliances as NATO are defined by what is not said, namely the trust that lies at their core,' during his interactions with journalists.

Macron further elaborated that questioning commitments on a daily basis undermines this trust. 'If you question your commitments every day, you erode that trust,' he emphasized. He pointed out that certain U.S. officials contribute to uncertainty by signaling that 'they will not do this or that, or that or this.'

Moreover, Macron remarked that when a country signs a treaty, it should not question it every day. 'When you sign a treaty, you do not question it every morning and say whether you will act or not. You say nothing – and on the day a problem arises, you are there,' he stressed, highlighting the importance of adhering to commitments within the alliance.

In addition to his comments on NATO, the French president responded to some personal remarks made by Trump about him and his wife, Brigitte, during a press conference. Notably, Trump had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with NATO allies, mentioning a call to Macron and joking that his wife 'hits' him, and that he is 'still recovering from a punch to the jaw.'

Trump's comments sparked outrage among French politicians, who deemed such statements unacceptable. They emphasized that remarks of this nature could further complicate relations between France and the United States, as well as jeopardize the stability of NATO as a military alliance.

Thus, Macron's words during his visit to Seoul underscore the importance of trust and stability in relations among allies, particularly in the context of global political instability. The French president called for greater responsibility from the United States to maintain the unity and strength of NATO in today's world.
