Macron on Trump's Statements Regarding NATO Withdrawal: The World Needs Stability, This Is Not a Show
During his state visit to South Korea, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks about potentially withdrawing from NATO, emphasizing the importance of stability in international relations.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to reporters during his state visit to South Korea, as reported by a correspondent from Ukrinform.
Macron highlighted the immense value of alliances such as NATO, which extends beyond their military capabilities to the trust that exists among member countries. He explained, "Alliances like NATO are valuable not only for what they do but also for the trust that underpins them."
The French President underscored that ongoing doubts about commitments can lead to the erosion of the essence of the alliance. "If you doubt your commitments every day, you can ultimately deplete their essence," he remarked, pointing to the importance of stability in international relations.
Macron also drew attention to the responsibility that American authorities take on when they make daily statements about their intentions. "This is a responsibility that the American government assumes today, saying every morning: we will do this, we will not do that, or something else. Too much talk, too much inconsistency. The world needs stability. This is not a show. When you want to be serious, you do not contradict what you said the day before," he emphasized.
Furthermore, Macron confirmed that France does not plan to assist the United States in 'opening' the Strait of Hormuz. "The U.S. may regret not receiving assistance in an operation they decided to conduct independently," the president noted, adding that the restoration of this strategic route is only possible after consultations with Iran and a ceasefire.
"We do not believe that we can open it by force; a military operation to liberate it would be unrealistic. So this has never been an option we considered," Macron stated, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic approach to resolving the conflict.
It is worth recalling that earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the United States from NATO, as allies did not support military actions against Iran. Trump also expressed concern that NATO faces a "very bad" future if allies do not assist in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States would review its NATO membership due to European countries prohibiting the U.S. from using their bases for operations against Iran.
Trump also threatened to halt arms supplies to Ukraine in an effort to compel European allies to join his coalition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. These statements have raised concerns among the international community, as they could significantly impact global security.
