Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Lyashko has made a significant announcement regarding the average salary of family doctors, revealing that the capitation rate for primary healthcare has been raised to 1,070 hryvnias since the beginning of this year. This decision has laid the groundwork for salary increases not only for doctors but also for nurses. According to Lyashko, the current average salary for doctors stands at 33,000 hryvnias, and the government intends to raise this figure to 35,000 hryvnias within the current year.
Lyashko also highlighted the global issue of the shortage of medical personnel, which has become particularly acute in Ukraine due to the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation. He noted that the government and the Ministry of Health are taking several measures to attract young people to the medical profession. Specifically, this includes the nursing profession, for which a nursing development strategy was adopted two years ago. This strategy encompasses improvements in education, the establishment of simulation centers, and investments in medical colleges.
In addition to financial incentives, Lyashko emphasized that the atmosphere within the team plays a crucial role in the work of medical professionals. The minister stressed the necessity of creating conditions for teamwork to ensure that the role of nurses is not undervalued in the medical process. He also pointed out that nurses are receiving increasing autonomy and authority in their work, which positively impacts their motivation.
Lyashko further reported that the Ministry of Health is proposing to transfer school nurses, who are currently funded by local budgets, to healthcare institutions operating under the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) packages. This move aims to provide higher quality medical services in educational institutions.
Thus, the Ministry of Health is actively working to improve working conditions for medical professionals, increase their salaries, and attract new personnel to the healthcare sector. It is crucial that these efforts are directed towards ensuring high-quality medical care for all citizens of Ukraine, especially in the context of the challenging epidemiological situation and military challenges the country is currently facing.
