Flights from China to Europe Rerouted Due to Airport Closure in Russia Amid Drone Attack

The Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, one of Russia's largest airports, was closed for several hours due to a drone attack incident, leading to significant changes in flight routes from China.

The Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, one of the largest airports in Russia, experienced a temporary closure lasting several hours due to an incident linked to drone attacks. This unexpected development resulted in substantial alterations to the flight paths of aircraft departing from China, as their usual routes passing south of St. Petersburg over the Gulf of Finland were redirected through Finnish territory.

According to information provided by Yle and reported by Ukrinform, several flights that had taken off from Shanghai crossed the eastern border near Joensuu in the morning. Following this, they continued their journey through Finland, heading towards Central Europe. This decision became necessary due to the closure of Pulkovo Airport, which caused delays and cancellations of dozens of flights.

During the airport's closure, aircraft already in the air were forced to circle in the airspace east of St. Petersburg, waiting for the opportunity to land. This situation created significant inconveniences for passengers awaiting their flights, as many were left without information regarding their next steps.

As previously reported, on April 5, a drone attack occurred in Primorsk, Leningrad Oblast, resulting in damage to a section of the oil pipeline in the port area. This incident raised heightened concerns in the region and prompted additional security measures, which in turn affected the operations of Pulkovo Airport.

The closure of the airport and the rerouting of flights from China underscore the increasing risks associated with aviation security in the region, linked to military conflicts and terrorist threats. Pulkovo Airport, a vital transportation hub, typically serves thousands of passengers daily, and any disruptions in its operations can have significant repercussions for aviation infrastructure.

In light of these events, it is crucial to stay updated with the latest information from airlines, as the situation may evolve. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights and be prepared for potential delays or changes in their travel routes.
