Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the President of Russia, stated that the program is voluntary and accessible to anyone who wishes to join. 'This is an entirely open offer, an opportunity to join a new type of unit,' Peskov remarked, presenting this initiative as a chance for young individuals with technical skills rather than as an indication of increasing pressure on military personnel numbers during the ongoing war.

Students across Russia are being offered substantial financial incentives to join drone units involved in combat in Ukraine, taking on roles as operators and engineers. This reflects how Moscow is expanding its recruitment campaign while avoiding the need for a new general mobilization. According to information published by Reuters, universities such as the Far Eastern Federal University and the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering are promoting packages that include academic leave, educational benefits, free housing, and salaries that can reach up to 7 million rubles, approximately $87,000 per year.

The recruitment offers are particularly targeted at students pursuing technical specialties, such as engineering and aeronautics. The recruitment campaign highlights the growing significance of drone warfare within the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Although these positions are advertised as being away from the front lines, the work remains high-risk and is directly linked to combat operations.

This initiative also indicates that the Kremlin is seeking to bolster its ranks without resorting to a new mass mobilization, which, according to officials, is not currently under consideration. Authorities are striving to find new ways to maintain troop levels as the demand for technical specialists to manage drone systems continues to rise.

Furthermore, recent reports have shed light on other incidents related to drone attacks. For instance, Russian drones struck a residential building in the Kyiv district of Kharkiv, resulting in a fire and injuries among civilians.
