EU Commissioner Explains Why Exceptions for Ukraine's EU Membership Criteria Are Not Beneficial

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, emphasized that making exceptions for Ukraine regarding EU membership criteria due to its vulnerable situation amid war would not benefit either Ukraine or the EU. She made these remarks during an interview on a national telemarathon.

In a recent interview, Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding Ukraine's potential membership in the European Union. She firmly stated that creating exceptions for Ukraine in the EU accession criteria, given its precarious circumstances due to the ongoing war, would ultimately be detrimental to both Ukraine and the EU.

During the interview, which was broadcasted on a national telemarathon, Kos was questioned about the prevailing sentiment that the traditional approach to admitting new members into the EU is somewhat outdated. The inquiry also touched upon why the EU cannot make exceptions for Ukraine, especially considering its unique experiences and challenges that could offer valuable insights to Europe.

Kos responded by asserting, 'I believe that exceptions for your country would not help it, nor would they strengthen it – because it would undermine trust in the entire process and in your future membership.' She elaborated that it is crucial to ensure Ukraine's genuine readiness for coexistence and shared life within the European Union.

'When Ukraine joins the European Union, it must enhance us, not weaken us... When we work with a candidate country, we prepare you as a candidate in the transformation process. Everything needs to be done properly – the transformation of your economy, your society,' Kos explained.

Furthermore, she noted that the European Commission is already accelerating and refining the process for Ukraine as much as possible. 'Every reform brings Ukraine closer to EU membership. When reforms accelerate, accession gets closer; when reforms slow down, the accession date moves further away,' she added.

Kos's comments come in the wake of her announcement on March 17, when she declared that all six negotiation clusters for Ukraine were 'unofficially open.' This development is seen as a significant step forward in Ukraine's EU integration efforts.

In related news, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament has pledged to implement all necessary reforms for Ukraine's EU membership by 2027. Additionally, Taras Kachka, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, believes that even without reforming the enlargement methodology, the EU can significantly expedite Ukraine's accession process.

Previously, Kos had stated that 'Ukraine is not in a deadlock' regarding its EU membership aspirations. This statement has been met with optimism among Ukrainian officials and citizens alike, as they seek to solidify their place within the European community.
