Former Dynamo Kyiv Midfielder Ivan Yaremchuk Receives Suspended Sentence in Czech Republic

Ivan Yaremchuk, a former midfielder for Kyiv's Dynamo and the Soviet Union national team, has been sentenced to six months of suspended imprisonment in the Czech Republic, a verdict announced in absentia.

Ivan Yaremchuk, the former midfielder for Kyiv's Dynamo and the Soviet national team, has received a six-month suspended prison sentence in the Czech Republic. This verdict was announced in absentia, meaning Yaremchuk was not required to travel to Prague to be informed of the ruling.

The legendary footballer, who has achieved significant success in his career, stated that he does not plan to appeal the verdict and will attempt to forget this unpleasant situation that occurred during his time living in Prague from 2022 to 2023. According to the publication Champion, Yaremchuk commented, "I do not wish to share the details of this criminal case. You are already aware of my gambling issues. Considering the verdict, you can understand that the offense was not a serious crime. I have drawn conclusions from this experience. I do not intend to violate any laws again and will conduct myself with dignity.

As part of the ruling, Yaremchuk has also been banned from entering the Czech Republic for two years. He warned that if he commits any offenses within the next 24 months, the suspended sentence could be converted into actual imprisonment, and he could be sent to jail for six months.

In October 2025, Yaremchuk was arrested at Krakow Airport at the request of the Czech authorities, and he spent approximately six weeks in a Polish prison. This incident marked another chapter in his troubled history related to legal issues.

Currently, Yaremchuk resides in Belgium, where he has been granted refugee status. He left Ukraine in March 2022, shortly after turning 60. For many years, Yaremchuk has struggled with gambling addiction, which has led him to lose all his wealth, including his property, which he lost in casinos.

Yaremchuk rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s while playing for Dynamo, where he was regarded as one of the fastest players on the team. He won the Cup Winners' Cup with Dynamo in 1986 and played in Germany, Israel, Finland, and Russia. His career was filled with bright moments; however, personal problems have overshadowed his sporting achievements in recent times.

Recently, it was reported that in the 22nd round of the Ukrainian Premier League, Kyiv's Dynamo suffered a home defeat against Lviv's Karpaty, adding further tension to the atmosphere surrounding the club. This loss is likely to have sparked discussions among fans and experts, who believe that the team needs changes to get back on the path to success.
