Who Could Lead the Ukrainian National Team After Serhiy Rebrov?

Renowned Ukrainian journalist and insider Mykhailo Spivakovskyi has shared insights on potential candidates to become the new head coach of the Ukrainian national football team, should the current manager Serhiy Rebrov not extend his contract.

During the program 'TaToTake', Spivakovskyi noted that the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) is potentially considering former Lviv Carpathians coach Vladyslav Lupashko for the position. 'Our subscribers are talking about Lupashko, and you would be surprised. I was surprised myself, but speaking with people from the federation, I heard the name Lupashko. So I understand that if there is some kind of middle list, he will be on it. Why? Because the federation probably realizes that Lupashko's profile as a coach fits the national team better, as he is more of a sprinter by nature rather than a marathon runner,' stated Mykhailo Spivakovskyi.

It is important to remember that Vladyslav Lupashko was dismissed from his role as head coach of the Carpathians last year following a series of disappointing results. However, in the 2023/2024 season, the 39-year-old specialist has been actively involved in professional football, leading the team 'Inhulets', which highlights his ongoing engagement in the sport.

Serhiy Rebrov's contract with the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) is valid until July 31, 2026. Nevertheless, the team's performance under his leadership has raised concerns. In March 2026, the Ukrainian national team failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing in the semi-finals of the European qualifying playoff to Sweden with a score of 1:3.

The next official match for the Ukrainian national team is scheduled for the fall. On September 25, the team will play an away match against Hungary as part of League B of the Nations League. This match will be a crucial step in the team's preparation for upcoming competitions.

Previously, it was reported that the Ukrainian national team is among the top five most valuable teams that will not participate in the 2026 World Cup. This underscores the high potential and value of Ukrainian footballers, who, despite their absence from the global stage, remain in the spotlight of football analysts and fans.

Thus, the question of a new coaching staff for the Ukrainian national team remains open, and further decisions by the UAF could significantly impact the future of the team. Choosing a coach who can ensure success on the international stage is critically important for the development of Ukrainian football.
