Ukrainian Karateka Horyna Receives Back Olympic Bronze Medal from 2020
Ukrainian karateka Stanislav Horyna has been reunited with his bronze medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a gesture that underscores international support for Ukraine during challenging times.
Ukrainian karateka Stanislav Horyna has been returned his bronze medal from the 2020 Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan. The athlete had previously auctioned off this medal in 2022 to raise funds for the Ukrainian Defense Forces and humanitarian needs arising from Russia's full-scale invasion.
According to NHK, the winning bidder from Japan handed the medal back to Stanislav during his recent visit to Tokyo. This act has become a symbol of support for the Ukrainian people during a difficult period. As reported by Ukrinform, the medal was purchased by a Japanese auction participant for $20,500 and is associated with a local karate club.
Stanislav Horyna won the bronze medal in men's kumite (weight category up to 75 kg) at the 2020 Olympic Games. Following the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the athlete decided to auction off his award to assist his country during its time of crisis. His decision exemplified patriotism and a willingness to support his homeland amidst adversity.
The medal's buyer stated that the initial plan was to return the award after the fighting in Ukraine concluded; however, due to the prolonged invasion, it was decided to return it earlier. This act was a gesture of support and a manifestation of hope for the restoration of peace in Ukraine. The medal return ceremony took place in one of Tokyo's training halls, further underscoring the significance of this moment.
During the ceremonial event, a child from a Japanese karate club placed the medal around the neck of the Ukrainian athlete, symbolizing friendship and solidarity between nations. This moment was significant not only for Stanislav but also for all those who support Ukraine in its fight for independence.
This story reaffirms the importance of international support during times of crisis. Sports continue to be a powerful tool for unity and understanding among people, regardless of their backgrounds. Stanislav Horyna remains a role model for young athletes, demonstrating that even in the most challenging times, there are ways to help one's country.
