Spain Leads Movement for EU Autonomy

Residents of Spain are actively advocating for the establishment of a stronger and more independent Europe amid rising concerns regarding U.S. policies under President Donald Trump. This sentiment is confirmed by a new survey conducted by Politico, as reported by 'European Truth.'
According to the March survey, which included respondents from six European Union countries, 51% of Spanish participants expressed the view that Washington poses a 'threat' to Europe. This is the highest percentage among all surveyed nations, indicating deep-seated worries among Spaniards regarding the foreign policy of the United States.
The survey results also revealed significant opposition among Spaniards to the foreign policy of the American president, as well as to military actions by the U.S. and Israel in Iran. A striking 56% of respondents in Spain categorically oppose offensive operations by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, while 43% believe that Madrid should publicly oppose these military actions and advocate for their cessation.
Only respondents from Italy demonstrated even greater opposition to U.S. actions in Iran. At the same time, Spaniards showed strong support for the idea of increasing Europe's autonomy. The survey indicated that 94% of Spanish respondents believe the continent should become more self-sufficient and less dependent on other major powers, even if this leads to significant economic costs.
Interestingly, Spanish respondents slightly outpaced Belgians in their support for greater European autonomy—94% compared to 93%. Overall, this concept was supported by 87% of respondents across the six countries, reflecting a broader European trend towards autonomy.
Residents of Spain also expressed a willingness to defend EU countries that come under attack from foreign states and supported the idea of creating a European army. According to the survey, 89% of respondents are willing to support the deployment of the Spanish army to assist any EU member state that has been attacked, surpassing the figures from Belgium and Poland, where this figure stands at 86%.
The European Pulse survey was conducted by Cluster17 for Politico and beBartlet, covering 6,698 Europeans from Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Belgium. The research was carried out from March 13 to March 21.
It is worth noting that since the onset of U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, Spain has taken a strong stance against these actions and has not allowed the U.S. to use its jointly operated military bases for attacks on Iran. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to completely halt trade with Spain. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned Trump's actions, stating that they contradict international law.
