India Still Denies Access to Consul for Six Detained Ukrainians; Foreign Ministry Demands Their Release

Since their detention on March 13, six Ukrainian citizens have not been granted consular access by Indian authorities. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is making every effort to secure their release.

Since the detention of six Ukrainian citizens on March 13, Indian authorities have yet to allow consular access to the detainees. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is actively working to secure their release, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

On March 27, the Special Court of India’s National Investigation Agency held a closed hearing and ruled to keep the detained Ukrainians in custody until April 6. This decision has raised significant concerns among Ukrainian officials, who are advocating for the rights of their citizens.

In a statement to Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda, diplomats explained that the Ukrainian Embassy in India is taking diplomatic measures in response to the situation. This includes meetings between Ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk and officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and other relevant agencies. During these discussions, the Ukrainian side expressed an official protest against the detention of its citizens, citing violations of their rights and obligations under both national and international law.

Furthermore, Ambassador Polishchuk has called for the immediate release and repatriation of the detained Ukrainians. The embassy has repeatedly notified India’s Ministry of External Affairs regarding the need for consular access, but as of April 2, no such permission has been granted.

In addition to these efforts, a representative from the Department of Consular Services of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry held a meeting with a consular officer from the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. This meeting aimed to further address the situation and seek resolution.

The embassy continues to take measures to ensure proper legal protection for the detained citizens, with the goal of achieving their release. The case is under special control by the Foreign Ministry, highlighting the seriousness with which Ukrainian officials are treating this matter.

Prior to the detentions, Indian media reported that the six Ukrainians were arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist activities. However, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has emphasized that there is no evidence supporting any involvement of the detained individuals in illegal activities.

This incident has drawn significant attention both in Ukraine and internationally, as it raises questions about the treatment of foreign nationals in India and the adherence to international legal standards. The Ukrainian government remains committed to advocating for the rights of its citizens abroad and ensuring their safety and well-being.
