UN Secretary-General Warns World on Brink of Broader War with 'Dramatic Consequences'

In a press conference addressing the Middle East situation, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the world stands on the brink of a broader war that could have dramatic consequences globally.

In a press conference addressing the ongoing situation in the Middle East, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted that the world is on the verge of a wider conflict that could have severe implications for the entire globe. According to Guterres, the conflict, which has now entered its second month, is leading to increased human suffering, destruction, and indiscriminate attacks, particularly against civilian populations and infrastructure.

"My message is clear. To the United States and Israel - it is time to stop the war that is causing immense human suffering and already resulting in devastating economic consequences. To Iran - cease attacks on your neighbors," Guterres stated, calling for an urgent cessation of the escalation of the conflict.

The UN Secretary-General noted that the repercussions of this conflict are already being felt on a global scale. He specifically pointed out the restrictions on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which negatively impacts energy and food prices in many countries. "We are on the brink of a broader war that could engulf the entire Middle East with dramatic consequences for the world," he emphasized.

Guterres also urged support for diplomatic efforts, which should be based on international law and the UN Charter. "The spiral of death and destruction must be stopped," he stressed, underscoring the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts.

The Secretary-General reported that he maintains constant contact with the parties involved in the conflict and is sending his special envoy Jean Arnault to the region to facilitate diplomatic efforts. "Conflicts do not end on their own. They end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction. That choice still exists. And it needs to be made now," Guterres underlined.

It is worth noting that earlier, Secretary-General António Guterres established a special task force to respond to the risks associated with disruptions in maritime trade caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. These actions reflect the seriousness of the situation and the urgent need for measures to ensure stability in the region.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, and the international community is concerned about the potential consequences of escalating conflict. Guterres' calls for peace and dialogue could represent a crucial step towards reducing tensions and preventing further destruction.
