UN Secretary-General Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement in the Persian Gulf

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the achievement of a ceasefire agreement in the Persian Gulf, marking a significant step towards stabilizing the situation in the region.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the achievement of a ceasefire agreement in the Persian Gulf, marking a significant step towards stabilizing the situation in the region. According to the information agency Ukrinform, Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, made this announcement on Tuesday evening, emphasizing the importance of all parties adhering to the terms of the agreement.

Dujarric noted that the UN Secretary-General urged all conflict participants to 'adhere to the ceasefire conditions to pave the way for a durable and comprehensive peace in the region.' He also highlighted the necessity of fulfilling obligations under international law, which is critically important for ensuring stability.

‘The Secretary-General stressed that a cessation of hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilian lives and alleviate human suffering,’ Dujarric added, underscoring the humanitarian aspect of the situation. This indicates that peace efforts must be directed not only at political agreements but also at safeguarding human rights and ensuring the safety of civilians.

In the context of these events, Jean Arnaud, the personal envoy of the Secretary-General, is currently in the region to support efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace. His presence reflects the active stance of the UN in conflict resolution and promoting peaceful dialogue among the parties involved.

As reported earlier, the United States, Israel, and Iran have reached an agreement for a two-week mutual ceasefire, as well as the reopening of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision is the result of prolonged negotiations and represents an important step towards reducing tensions in a region where conflicts and military actions have had serious consequences for the local population.

It is worth recalling that on February 28, the United States and Israel conducted joint strikes on regime targets in Iran, which prompted a response from Iran, attacking American bases in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Jordan. These events underscore the complexity of the situation in the region and the necessity for diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace.
