General Staff: Russia Has Lost 1,307,540 Military Personnel in Ukraine Since February 24, 2022
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russian forces have lost a staggering 1,307,540 military personnel. This information, released on April 9, 2023, underscores the extent of the losses that Russia has suffered during the ongoing conflict.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has released alarming figures regarding the losses incurred by Russian military forces since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. According to the latest report published on April 9, 2023, Russian troops have suffered a total of 1,307,540 military personnel casualties. This significant statistic highlights the severe toll that the conflict has taken on Russia.
In the last 24 hours alone, Russian forces reportedly sustained 1,040 losses. Beyond personnel, the Russian military has also faced considerable equipment losses. As of the latest data from the General Staff, Russia has lost 11,847 tanks, 24,370 armored combat vehicles, 88,332 vehicles and fuel tanks, 39,689 artillery systems, 1,724 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,341 air defense systems, 435 aircraft, 350 helicopters, 227,539 drones, 33 ships and boats, as well as two submarines.
It is important to note that the General Staff of Ukraine has not disclosed its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. While Ukrainian officials rarely provide specific figures, President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned in an interview with the French television channel France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in combat since the war began, with many others considered missing in action.
The intensity of Russian drone usage and combat operations has complicated Ukraine's ability to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers, which is necessary for confirming their identities through DNA testing. Independent Western analytical centers agree that Russia's losses far exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the casualty ratio to be approximately 2.5:1 or 2:1 in favor of Ukraine.
In a report by CSIS dated January 2026, it is estimated that Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 to 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with between 100,000 to 140,000 considered to have died in combat. These figures emphasize the gravity of the situation and the scale of the tragedy unfolding in Ukraine as a result of aggression from Russia.
