General Staff: Russia Has Lost 1,304,550 Military Personnel in Ukraine Since February 24, 2022

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has released data indicating that Russian military casualties in Ukraine have reached 1,304,550 since the onset of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This information, disclosed on April 5, highlights the severe losses Russia has endured in its war against Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has revealed alarming statistics regarding the losses sustained by Russian troops in Ukraine, reporting that the total number of military personnel lost has reached 1,304,550 since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This disclosure, made on April 5, underscores the significant toll that the conflict has taken on Russian forces amidst ongoing hostilities.

According to the report, Russian troops suffered 1,180 casualties in just the last day alone. In addition to personnel losses, Russian armed forces have also faced substantial equipment losses, with reports indicating the destruction of 11,839 tanks, 24,350 armored combat vehicles, 87,355 vehicles and fuel tanks, 39,439 artillery systems, 1,719 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,338 air defense systems, 435 aircraft, 350 helicopters, 219,443 drones, 33 ships and boats, and two submarines.

The General Staff of Ukraine has opted not to disclose its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy as the reason. Although Ukrainian officials rarely provide specific numbers, President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with a French television channel on February 4, noted that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in combat since the war began, with many others reported missing in action.

The intense use of Russian drones and the nature of ongoing combat operations have complicated Ukraine's efforts to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers, which is necessary for confirming their identities through DNA testing. Independent Western analytical centers have corroborated that Russian losses significantly exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the casualty ratio to be approximately 2.5:1 or 2:1 in favor of Ukrainian forces.

In a report by CSIS published in January 2026, it is projected that Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 to 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with between 100,000 to 140,000 considered to have perished in battle. These figures reflect the staggering human toll both sides have endured in this prolonged conflict, which has now persisted for over two years.
