Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg Calls for a New Defense Alliance Due to NATO's Ineffectiveness in the War with Iran

Retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg has called on the United States to create a new defense alliance, arguing that NATO has proven ineffective in the war with Iran. During his appearance on Fox News, Kellogg highlighted that the current structure of NATO does not adequately respond to contemporary threats and suggested that the United States would be better served by forming new defense partnerships that are prepared for collective action.

“Perhaps we should create a new defense structure, a new NATO,” Kellogg stated, pointing to the necessity of reassessing existing alliances. He emphasized that during the conflict with Iran, NATO exhibited weakness and ineffectiveness, which could pose a serious threat to the security of the United States.

The general also referenced Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows any country to withdraw from NATO one year after submitting a notice of denunciation. This underscores the seriousness of his proposal for establishing a new defense alliance that could better align with current conditions.

Among the countries Kellogg suggested for forming an alternative defense structure are Japan, Australia, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine. “We need to reassess existing defense alliances, perhaps create a new one with Japan and Australia, as well as some European countries willing to engage in combat, such as Germany or Poland. Even Ukraine, which has also proven its effectiveness as a good ally,” Kellogg emphasized.

Kellogg's statements come against the backdrop of recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who on April 1 expressed in an interview with The Telegraph his intention to seriously consider withdrawing the United States from NATO. Trump noted that this issue became relevant after allies refused to support him in the conflict with Iran.

Previously, Trump had claimed that America did not need assistance in the war with Iran. In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on March 17, he emphasized that he “always knew that the Alliance would never help the U.S.” These remarks from the president highlight the growing tension in relations between the United States and its NATO allies, raising questions about the future of this military alliance.
