In a rescheduled seventh round match of the Turkish Championship, football club Galatasaray met with Göztepe. This match was special not only for its sporting significance but also for honoring the memory of legendary coach Mircea Lucescu, who passed away on April 7. Galatasaray achieved a confident victory with a score of 3-1, but the main theme of the evening was the tribute to the outstanding specialist.
Before the match began, Galatasaray players took to the field for warm-ups wearing shirts emblazoned with the image of Mircea Lucescu. This gesture became a symbol of respect and remembrance for the coach who left a significant mark on Turkish football. As noted by the club, the players wanted to express their gratitude and honor his contribution to the development of the team and football in general.
Additionally, the team entered the pitch with a banner dedicated to Lucescu, further emphasizing how important his role was in the life of the club. The banner featured words of gratitude and remembrance for the coach who accomplished much for Galatasaray, including winning the Turkish Championship in the 2001/02 season and the UEFA Super Cup in 2000.
Galatasaray's press service also published a touching statement expressing deep sorrow over the death of Mircea Lucescu. The statement read: "With deep sadness, we learned of the passing of Mircea Lucescu — the coach who brought another European trophy to our country by winning the UEFA Super Cup, and who served as the head coach of our team during our 15th championship. We extend our condolences to Mircea Lucescu's family, his loved ones, and the entire football community. We will not forget you, Lucescu."
Mircea Lucescu, a Romanian specialist, worked in Turkey for a long time, gaining popularity and recognition for his achievements. His career at Galatasaray was marked by great success, and his influence on the team and Turkish football as a whole is hard to overestimate.
It is worth noting that on March 29, 2026, Lucescu was hospitalized after falling ill during the Romanian national team's training camp following a defeat to Turkey (0-1) in the playoff qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. On April 2, he resigned from his position as head coach of the Romanian team, and by April 3, he suffered an acute myocardial infarction in the hospital. Following this, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment.
During a CT scan, numerous signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism were discovered in Lucescu. His condition was assessed by medical professionals as critical, with cardiologist Ștefan Bușnatu reporting damage to several organs — the heart, brain, and lungs.
This tragic news came as a shock to the football community, and many players and coaches expressed their condolences. Previously, a star from Inter also shared an emotional photo with Lucescu, commenting on his death and emphasizing the importance of remembering such outstanding figures in the world of sports.
