The Romanian Football Federation has officially announced the suspension of the process to appoint a new head coach for the national team due to the tragic death of Mircea Lucescu, who had recently been at the helm of the team. This news has come as a shock to the entire Romanian football community, as Lucescu was not only a coach but also a true symbol and mentor for many generations of players.
Razvan Burleanu, the President of the Romanian Football Federation, expressed his condolences and emphasized that Lucescu's death was a tremendous blow to Romanian football. He stated, "This is a black day for Romania and for world football. We have lost a person who lived for football and dedicated every second of his life to it. Mircea Lucescu was not just a coach; he was a mentor and a life teacher for entire generations of players. He was a man who loved this sport above all else, and his impact on our football is immeasurable."
Burleanu also added that during these difficult times, their thoughts are with Lucescu's grieving family, and he expressed hope that his lessons, elegance, and the immense void he left would forever remain in memory. "A smooth journey among the stars, Mr. Lucescu," he concluded.
In light of these tragic events, the Romanian Football Federation has also announced that the process of appointing a new head coach for the national team has been suspended indefinitely. This decision underscores the depth of mourning and respect for the memory of the outstanding coach.
Mircea Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after feeling unwell during a gathering of the Romanian national team following their 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. On April 2, he stepped down from his position as the coach of the Romanian team, which was further evidence of his deteriorating condition.
On April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction while in the hospital, after which he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment. During a CT scan, numerous signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism were discovered, and his condition was assessed as critical.
Cardiologist Stefan Busnatu evaluated the Romanian coach's condition after the CT scan, noting that several organs were affected: the heart, brain, and lungs, significantly increasing the risks. Unfortunately, on April 7, Mircea Lucescu passed away, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the world of football.
The news of Lucescu's death was met with responses from many football clubs, including Dynamo, Shakhtar, Milan's Inter, and Madrid's Real, which expressed their condolences and honored the memory of the great coach.
Earlier reports indicated that former Real and Barcelona player Gheorghe Hagi could be a potential successor to Lucescu as the head coach of the Romanian national team; however, in light of recent events, this matter remains open.
