FC Internazionale Expresses Condolences Following the Death of Mircea Lucescu
FC Internazionale, based in Milan, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former team coach Mircea Lucescu, highlighting his significant contributions to the development of football and his remarkable achievements as a coach.
FC Internazionale, the renowned football club from Milan, has announced with profound sadness the death of its former coach, Mircea Lucescu. In a statement released by the club, they emphasized Lucescu's immense contribution to the sport and his notable accomplishments as a coach.
The official website of Inter published a message in which the club extends its condolences, offering support to Lucescu's family and loved ones. "FC Internazionale expresses its deepest condolences following the death of Mircea Lucescu, warmly embracing his family," the statement reads.
The document further notes that Lucescu was one of the most authoritative and respected figures in international football, leaving a lasting impact wherever he worked. His vision, charisma, and exceptional understanding of the game formed the foundation of his success. "His experience with the Nerazzurri marked a significant milestone in an incredibly lengthy career filled with triumphs: he won 37 trophies as a coach, placing him among the most decorated managers in the history of world football," the club's statement highlights.
Mircea Lucescu took charge of Inter in December 1998 and led the team in 22 matches. Under his guidance, the team reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where the Nerazzurri were defeated by the eventual tournament winners, Manchester United. This period became an important part of his career, which spanned over 40 years.
Unfortunately, Lucescu's health began to decline. On March 29, 2023, he was hospitalized after falling ill during a training camp with the Romanian national team, where the squad suffered a 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualification. On April 2, the specialist stepped down from his position as coach of the Romanian team due to health issues.
On April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction while still in the hospital. Following this, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe cardiac arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment. A CT scan revealed multiple signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism, and his condition was assessed as critical.
Cardiologist Stefan Busnatu, who evaluated the Romanian coach's condition after the CT scan, noted that several organs were affected — the heart, brain, and lungs — significantly increasing the risks. Tragically, today, April 7, news of Mircea Lucescu's passing has emerged, marking a significant loss for the entire football world.
FC Internazionale, along with many other clubs and football organizations, extends its condolences to the family and friends of Mircea Lucescu, honoring the memory of a remarkable coach and an individual who left an indelible mark in the history of football.
