Fico Calls on EU to Lift Sanctions and Renew Dialogue with Russia Following Talks with Orban
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has urged the European Union (EU) to lift sanctions against Russia and to restore dialogue with the country, as reported by Reuters.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has made a compelling call for the European Union (EU) to lift sanctions against Russia and to re-establish dialogue with the nation. This statement was reported by Reuters and conveyed by Ukrinform.
Fico emphasized the urgent need for measures to combat the energy crisis, which he attributed to the ongoing war in Iran. He stated that the EU, particularly the European Commission, must immediately restore contact with Russia to create a political and legal environment that would allow EU member states to replenish their gas and oil reserves.
"The EU, and especially the European Commission, must immediately resume dialogue with Russia and ensure such a political and legal environment that individual member states and the EU as a whole can replenish the missing gas and oil reserves and secure supplies of this strategic raw material from all possible sources and directions, including Russia," Fico underscored during a press conference.
This appeal from Prime Minister Fico comes in the wake of recent statements from his Hungarian counterpart, Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who also called for the lifting of sanctions against Russian energy. Orban expressed concern over the global energy crisis, which he believes requires urgent action from the EU.
The situation in Europe's energy markets remains tense, as the war in Iran and other geopolitical factors have led to a significant rise in energy prices. EU countries, which have relied on Russian supplies, are facing serious challenges in ensuring energy security.
Both Fico and Orban, representatives of right-wing political forces, stress the importance of restoring relations with Russia, a stance that has elicited mixed reactions among other EU countries. Some EU members, particularly the Baltic states and Poland, advocate for the continuation of sanctions against Russia, viewing them as necessary to deter Moscow's aggression.
Conversely, other countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, believe that re-establishing cooperation with Russia is critical for ensuring energy stability in the region. This divide in the positions of EU member states could complicate the adoption of joint decisions regarding energy policy.
