Finland Deploys Additional Radar Systems in Southeast Due to 'Lost' Drones
The Finnish Armed Forces have announced the deployment of additional radar systems in the southeast of the country as part of measures to enhance readiness against new incidents involving foreign drones entering Finnish airspace.
The Finnish Armed Forces have officially declared the deployment of additional radar systems in the southeastern region of the country. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the nation's preparedness for new occurrences of foreign unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entering Finnish airspace. The decision comes in response to recent incidents involving 'lost' Ukrainian drones, which, according to Finnish media reports, have crashed on Finnish territory.
On April 2, the Finnish Air Force announced the relocation of additional capabilities to the southeast of the country, along with an increase in the number of patrol flights conducted by fighter jets. These measures were initiated following a statement made last week regarding the enhancement of airspace monitoring in Finland due to Ukrainian strike UAVs targeting Russian ports located near St. Petersburg.
Finnish media outlets reported that the new radar systems have been deployed on a high hill in the vicinity of the city of Kouvola. This location has gained notoriety due to the incidents involving the crash of Ukrainian drones, which military officials have stated were unintentional. The Finnish military did not disclose specific information regarding the number and type of radars installed but indicated that the equipment allows for the detection of UAVs and other aerial targets, as well as determining their altitude and flight direction.
Additionally, Finnish military forces are receiving data from patrolling fighter jets from other NATO allies who are also present in the region. This collaboration enhances the airspace monitoring situation and improves the effectiveness of responses to potential threats.
The Finnish military has emphasized that if the situation regarding Ukrainian strikes on Russian ports in the Gulf of Finland continues, the heightened readiness regime will remain in effect. They stress that airspace security is a priority, and the country is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect its borders.
Furthermore, Finland plans to accelerate the launch of a smartphone alert system for air alarms in light of the recent incidents involving 'lost' drones. This decision aims to improve public awareness of potential threats and ensure rapid responses in case of emergencies.
The Finnish intelligence service has also warned that Russia is actively exploiting the situation with Ukrainian drones in its propaganda efforts, attempting to create a negative image of Ukraine and its military actions. This highlights the importance of information security and the necessity for vigilant monitoring of the information space.
Thus, Finland continues to strengthen its defense capabilities in response to new challenges arising from the conflict in Ukraine and demonstrates its readiness to protect its airspace from potential threats.
