Finland Revokes Refugee Status for Several Russians Due to National Security Threat

Finland has recently implemented measures to revoke the refugee status of several Russian nationals, citing concerns over national security. According to reports from the Ukrinform news agency, this significant decision is made possible by amendments to the country's legislation that will come into effect in early 2025.

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) has provided information indicating that individuals who have lost their refugee status in recent years, as well as those currently undergoing scrutiny, include citizens from Iraq and Russia. Specifically, nine of these individuals previously held refugee status, while five were granted additional protection.

Currently, Migri is reviewing an additional 15 cases that, as reported by the Finnish publication MTV, involve not only citizens of Iraq and Russia but also individuals from three other countries. This trend underscores the increasing importance of security concerns within the framework of Finland's immigration policy.

It is important to note that the legislative change allowing for the revocation of refugee status on security grounds was passed in May 2025. Previously, while criminal activity could be grounds for reconsideration of refugee status, it was insufficient for actual revocation.

This decision is part of a broader trend observed in Finland, where the Migration Service recorded a historic number of deportation decisions last year concerning foreigners convicted of crimes. Russians have emerged as one of the top three nationalities affected by these decisions.

As a host country for refugees, Finland faces challenges related to security and integration. Each decision to revoke refugee status is driven by the necessity to ensure the safety of its citizens and maintain law and order within the nation.

This situation highlights the importance of adhering to legislation and monitoring individuals who have been granted refugee status, particularly in the context of rising national security threats.
