Fedorov: Military Personnel Aged 18-25 to Receive Guaranteed Postponement After One-Year Contract
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that military personnel aged 18 to 25 serving under contract will receive a guaranteed postponement from conscription after completing their one-year contract.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has revealed that military personnel aged between 18 and 25 who are serving on a contractual basis will now receive a guaranteed postponement from conscription upon the completion of their one-year contract. This significant announcement was made via his Telegram channel, where he emphasized that the Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, has successfully refined the relevant regulation.
Fedorov pointed out that the new provision has already been fully implemented, allowing military personnel who have signed a one-year contract with the Defense Forces and have been discharged after its completion to expect a guaranteed postponement from conscription. According to the minister, this decision represents an important step towards establishing a modern professional army, where military service is a conscious choice made by each serviceman.
In addition, the minister announced that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the mechanism for formalizing this postponement. Military personnel can now practically utilize this tool, which will undoubtedly enhance the appeal of contract service for young people.
The postponement from conscription will remain in effect for 12 months following discharge from military service. During this period, conscription can only occur with the consent of the serviceman, adding an additional layer of protection for young men who wish to complete their education or pursue other endeavors before rejoining the army.
This decision is the result of extensive efforts by the Ministry of Defense, which aims to provide more flexible service conditions for the youth. Soldiers who sign a contract can be assured that after their service term, they will have the opportunity to plan their future without the risk of being called back to military service in the near term.
Fedorov emphasized that this innovation is intended to lay the groundwork for the formation of a professional army, where military service becomes a conscious choice rather than a compulsory obligation. The minister believes that this could significantly alter young people's attitudes towards military service and enhance trust in the army.
Thus, the new policy of the Ministry of Defense contributes to creating more comfortable conditions for young individuals who choose a military career while simultaneously addressing the state’s needs for defense and security. This decision is part of a broader strategy to reform the Ukrainian armed forces, which includes not only legislative changes but also improvements in social guarantees for military personnel.
