Evacuation of Thousands Due to Flooding in Dagestan

In Dagestan, a large-scale evacuation is underway due to the imminent threat of flooding. Authorities are mobilizing resources to ensure the safety of residents as they face this critical situation.

In Dagestan, as reported by Ukrinform, a large-scale evacuation of the population has commenced due to the danger of flooding. According to Russian media, a preventive evacuation of 4,165 individuals is planned from the Derbent district, including 823 children. Authorities are organizing their transport to temporary accommodation points as well as to relatives to ensure the safety of people during this critical time.

Elman Allahverdiyev, head of the Derbent district, stated that as of Sunday evening, approximately 800 households have already been evacuated. This highlights the seriousness of the situation faced by the residents of the region and the efforts being made to protect the population.

Sergey Melikov, head of Dagestan, noted that emergency services are operating in an intensified mode across all cities and districts of the republic. He emphasized that the situation is complex not only in Derbent and the Derbent district but also in the region's capital, Makhachkala, where severe weather consequences are also being observed.

Additionally, in the village of Kyrky, a landslide occurred, resulting in one house being completely destroyed and two others sustaining damage. The body of a deceased woman was found under the rubble, underscoring the tragic consequences of the natural disaster.

This marks the second major flooding event in Dagestan within the last week. As DW reminds us, heavy rains began in late March in the North Caucasus, severely impacting Dagestan and causing significant damage to infrastructure and housing.

Moreover, it is worth noting that similar natural disasters are not confined to Dagestan alone. In neighboring Afghanistan, heavy rains have also led to widespread flooding and building collapses, claiming the lives of 22 individuals. This indicates that the region is facing serious climate challenges that require urgent response and support.
