Escalation Will Not Lead to Ceasefire - Costa on the War in Iran

European Council President António Costa has voiced his opinion regarding the war in Iran, stating that the escalation of the conflict will not lead to a ceasefire. This assertion was made in a post on the social media platform X, as reported by the Ukrinform news agency.

Costa emphasized that after five weeks of war in the Middle East, it has become evident that the only path to addressing the root causes of the conflict is through diplomatic solutions. He highlighted that any strikes on civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, are illegal and unacceptable. These remarks pertain not only to the situation in Iran but also to Russia's war in Ukraine and other regions.

Furthermore, Costa pointed out that the civilian population of Iran is the primary victim of the actions taken by the Iranian regime. He believes that this population will also become the main casualty if the military campaign is expanded. This comment reflects the European Council President's deep concern regarding the consequences of the conflict for innocent civilians.

In his statement, Costa recalled a recent conversation with the President of Iran, during which he, on behalf of the European Union, urged the Iranian authorities to immediately cease strikes on neighboring countries and restore full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
