Security Expert Criticizes New Defense Bill
Security expert Oleksandr Kovalenko has expressed his dissatisfaction with a new defense policy bill currently under discussion in Ukraine's Parliament, highlighting significant shortcomings that could adversely affect the nation's security.
Security expert Oleksandr Kovalenko, who works at an analytical center, has voiced his concerns regarding a new bill related to Ukraine's defense policy. He pointed out that this legislation, which is being debated in the Verkhovna Rada, has several critical flaws that could negatively impact the national security of the country.
During an interview on Radio NV, Kovalenko emphasized that the bill fails to address the modern challenges faced by Ukraine, particularly the aggression from Russia. 'We are dealing with a situation where our neighbors not only do not hide their aggressive intentions but actively implement them. In such a situation, we need a law that clearly regulates our defense policy and provides the necessary resources for the army,' the expert stated.
Kovalenko also noted that the new bill lacks sufficient mechanisms for monitoring expenditures in the defense sector. 'In wartime, when every hryvnia matters, it is crucial to have clear rules that allow us to control where the funds go and how they are used,' he added.
The expert further highlighted that the bill does not provide adequate funding to enhance defense capabilities. 'We need to focus on ensuring that the army has everything necessary, from modern equipment to the training of personnel. Without this, we will not be able to effectively counter aggression,' Kovalenko stressed.
The context for the discussion of this bill is the ongoing situation in Ukraine, where a war with Russia continues. Since the onset of the conflict in 2014, the country has suffered significant losses, and defense issues have become a priority for the state. Amid the growing threat from its neighbor, the Ukrainian government is seeking optimal solutions to strengthen its defense capabilities.
Additionally, Kovalenko pointed out the importance of involving experts and specialists in the legislative process concerning defense. 'We must take into account the experience of other countries that have already faced similar challenges. This will allow us to avoid mistakes and create an effective defense system,' he concluded.
