Dynamo Suffers Shocking Defeat to Karpaty in Premier League

In a stunning turn of events during the 22nd round of the Ukrainian Premier League, Kyiv's Dynamo faced an unexpected home defeat against Lviv's Karpaty, losing by a narrow score of 0-1. This match left fans in disbelief as the traditionally favored team failed to capitalize on their chances for victory.

In a shocking outcome during the 22nd round of the Ukrainian Premier League, Kyiv's Dynamo suffered a surprising home defeat against Lviv's Karpaty, with a final score of 0-1. The match proved to be a true shock for fans, as the team, which is typically considered a favorite, was unable to convert its opportunities into a win.

The only goal of the match was scored by Dynamo forward Matviy Ponomarenko; however, his effort was unfortunately disallowed after a video review. The match's head referee, Dmytro Panchyshyn, ruled that a foul had occurred against Karpaty's goalkeeper Nazar Domchak, which sparked outrage among players and fans alike.

In a comment to PROFOOTBALL Digital, the 20-year-old Ponomarenko expressed his dissatisfaction with the referee's decision, asserting that his goal was entirely legitimate. "Did I touch the ball first? Yes, I did. I saw that he [the Karpaty goalkeeper] did not secure it [the ball]. He let it go, and I went for the ball and cleared it. Of course, there was contact. I'm not saying I didn't touch him. It was a game incident; these things happen, but he didn't secure the ball," Ponomarenko stated.

The player also emphasized that there are clear rules regarding when a goalkeeper secures the ball and when he does not. "When the VAR shows in motion that there is a goal, everyone says it's a goal. Then they simply make a still frame when the goalkeeper is not touching the ball, and his hands are over the ball when he is not securing it. If they disallow the goal based on that, then I honestly don't understand," he added.

In stoppage time of the second half, a scuffle broke out on the field between players from Dynamo and Karpaty, resulting in Ponomarenko receiving a second yellow card and being sent off. "If the referee gave [a red card], then it was deserved. I was getting up, and I see a person just charging at me from above. I had no intention of hitting him. I had no aggression; I wanted to get up and continue playing. I look, and there's already a brawl, and everyone is coming at me. If it’s a red card, then it’s a red card," Ponomarenko commented on the situation.

This defeat was particularly disappointing for Dynamo, as Matviy Ponomarenko has already scored nine goals in 11 matches this season. He continues to lead the scoring charts, and had his goal against Karpaty been counted, it would have extended his impressive seven-match scoring streak, which began in the game against Kudrivka on December 6, 2025.

It is worth noting that previously, former Shakhtar players Alex Teixeira and Andriy Vorobey also scored in seven consecutive matches in the Ukrainian championship, with the record belonging to the Brazilian, who found the net in 10 consecutive matches in 2015.

Thanks to this away victory, Karpaty, under coach Fernandez, has now accumulated 29 points and occupies the 9th position in the UPL standings. Meanwhile, Dynamo, with 41 points, remains in 4th place, raising concerns among the team's supporters.

In the next round, Igor Kostiuk's team will play away against Metalist 1925 Kharkiv on April 11 at 15:30, while the Lviv side will host Oleksandriya on April 11 at 13:00. Recently, Shakhtar's sporting director Dario Srna shared his thoughts on the team's readiness for two crucial matches, announcing a rotation in the squad.

This match serves as a vivid example of how crucial it is to adhere to the rules of the game and how referees' decisions can influence the outcome of a match. Fans of both teams hope for fairer decisions in future games.
