Railway Worker Sentenced to Eight Years for Spying for Russian FSB in Sumy Region
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the sentencing of a local railway worker to eight years in prison for espionage on behalf of Russian intelligence services. This case highlights the ongoing threat of foreign agents infiltrating Ukrainian structures to gather sensitive military information.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported a significant verdict against an employee of the local branch of Ukrzaliznytsia, who has been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment for spying for Russian special services. This incident serves as a stark example of how hostile agents are attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian institutions to obtain critical information regarding military operations and the positioning of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The convicted individual was found to be carrying out tasks for the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB). His activities came under the scrutiny of law enforcement when he began seeking 'easy earnings' through Telegram channels that discussed various aspects of the military situation in Ukraine. Consequently, his actions provided grounds for criminal prosecution.
During the investigation, it was uncovered that this agent was actively gathering intelligence on the deployment of artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Sumy region. He focused on the firing positions of multiple launch rocket systems and artillery, which are critically important for the country's defense in the context of ongoing warfare.
The military counterintelligence of the SBU was able to expose the perpetrator in October of last year. During a search, a smartphone was seized from him, which contained reports that he had sent to the Russian special service. These reports included information that could jeopardize the safety of Ukrainian military personnel and their positions.
In order to prevent further information leaks and to secure the locations of Ukrainian troops in areas of enemy reconnaissance activity, the Security Service of Ukraine undertook a series of preventive measures. This underscores the seriousness of the situation and the readiness of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat espionage.
The court found the individual guilty under Part 2 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to the unauthorized dissemination of information regarding the movement, movement, or location of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations established in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, in a state of martial law. This ruling marks an important step in the fight against hostile agents attempting to destabilize the situation in the country.
It is worth noting that earlier, Ukrinform reported on another case in which a Russian intelligence agent was sentenced to 15 years in prison with property confiscation for attempting to blow up a territorial recruitment and social support center in Kherson. These cases highlight the crucial work of Ukrainian law enforcement in ensuring national security and protecting the state from external threats.
