Russian Agent Sentenced to 15 Years for Attempting to Sabotage Ukrainian Railway

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully apprehended a Russian military intelligence agent who planned to carry out a sabotage operation on the railway tracks of Ukrzaliznytsia, endangering numerous lives. Following a court ruling, the perpetrator has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the successful arrest of a Russian military intelligence agent who was plotting to commit sabotage on the railway tracks of Ukrzaliznytsia, a move that posed a significant threat to public safety. In a decisive court ruling, the individual was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his actions.

According to case materials, the agent had constructed homemade devices intended to derail moving trains operated by Ukrzaliznytsia. Thanks to the swift actions of SBU operatives, the perpetrator was uncovered and detained at his workplace in the Kyiv region of Ukraine.

The investigation revealed that this agent, a resident of Chernihiv Oblast, had been recruited by the Russian military intelligence agency known as the GRU. The man worked as a repair and maintenance technician for elevators in Kyiv and came under the radar of Russian intelligence services due to his pro-Kremlin comments that he had posted in Telegram channel chats.

After his recruitment, the agent received instructions from his handler in Russia to carry out sabotage aimed at disrupting the transportation logistics of Ukraine's Defense Forces. To fulfill this task, the perpetrator crafted the tools for his crime in his own garage.

As per the plan, he concealed these devices in a cache at a cemetery near the site of the intended sabotage. Subsequently, the agent retrieved the tools and placed them on the railway tracks. However, SBU personnel promptly documented his actions and successfully dismantled the hostile equipment, preventing potential casualties.

During searches of the suspect's premises, a smartphone was confiscated, which he had used to coordinate his subversive activities with his GRU handler. This evidence proved crucial in the case against him.

As a result of the investigation, the court found the agent guilty under parts 2 of Article 28 and 2 of Article 113 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to sabotage committed by a group of individuals in a state of war.

This incident is not an isolated case. As reported by Ukrinform, the military counterintelligence of the SBU recently detained another FSB agent in the Volyn region, who was tracking the schedules and routes of freight trains operated by Ukrzaliznytsia, which Russians planned to target with airstrikes.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense, and the Security Service continues to actively work on detecting and neutralizing threats associated with the activities of hostile agents. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
