Legendary former captain and sporting director of Donetsk's FC Shakhtar, Dario Srna, expressed his deep emotions following the death of former head coach Mircea Lucescu. In an Instagram post, Srna shared his memories of their years together at the club, highlighting the achievements the team garnered under the guidance of this remarkable coach.

“Dear Mister, we spent twelve unforgettable years together at Shakhtar — years filled with victories, emotions, and memories. We won over 20 trophies, among which the most important is the UEFA Cup. You were not only a great coach but also a truly special person. You gave so much — to me and to the team. We will always be grateful for that. You will forever remain in our hearts. My sincerest condolences to your family. Rest in peace, Mister,” wrote Srna, emphasizing Lucescu's immense contribution to the development of the club.

Mircea Lucescu led FC Shakhtar from 2004 to 2016. During his tenure, the team played 573 matches under his leadership, securing 22 trophies, including eight Ukrainian championship titles, six Ukrainian Cups, and seven Ukrainian Super Cups. The most significant achievement was winning the UEFA Cup in 2009, which marked the club's first European trophy. After leaving Shakhtar, Lucescu continued his career, winning the Ukrainian Premier League with Dynamo Kyiv in the 2020/21 season. His contributions to football have made him one of the most successful coaches in history.

Unfortunately, on March 29, 2026, Lucescu was hospitalized after falling ill during a training camp with the Romanian national team following a 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. On April 2, he stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Romanian team, and on April 3, he suffered an acute myocardial infarction right in the hospital. Following this, he was placed in a medically induced coma due to severe heart arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment.

During a computed tomography scan, numerous signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism were found in Lucescu. His condition was assessed as critical, and cardiologist Stefan Busnatu reported damage to several organs — heart, brain, and lungs. Unfortunately, on the evening of April 7, Mircea Lucescu passed away, leaving behind a vast legacy in the world of football.

Previously, former Shakhtar star Tyson also expressed his condolences, sharing memorable photographs with Lucescu and reacting to his death. This loss has been a heavy blow for all who knew and respected this outstanding coach, as his contribution to the development of Ukrainian football is hard to overstate.
