The United Kingdom has reported the discovery of a covert Russian operation in the Atlantic Ocean, raising concerns among military experts and government officials. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace highlighted the increasing Russian activity in the northern Atlantic region. According to Wallace, a Russian Akula-class attack submarine and two specialized submarines belonging to the Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research of Russia have been detected in these waters.
Wallace also reminded the public of the sighting of the Russian reconnaissance ship 'Yantar', which was recorded in November of last year. These incidents indicate a surge in Russian military operations in the area, causing alarm within British military circles.
The Defense Secretary emphasized that these Russian vessels have been ordered by President Vladimir Putin to conduct a 'hybrid war against the United Kingdom and its allies, particularly concerning critically important underwater infrastructure.' According to Wallace, the Russian submarines are intended to survey underwater infrastructure during peacetime and to sabotage it in the event of conflict.
British military forces are actively tracking these vessels both at sea and in the air as part of a coordinated mission with allies. Wallace noted that one of the Akula-class submarines has already returned to Russia, which may indicate the completion of its mission in the Atlantic.
Furthermore, Wallace reported that military operations against Russian submarines have been ongoing for over a month, involving more than 500 British servicemen. These operations are aimed at monitoring and countering potential threats posed by Russia.
At the same time, the British Defense Secretary stated that there is currently no evidence that Russian submarines in the Atlantic have caused damage to the country's underwater cables or pipelines. This may suggest that despite the active presence of Russian military forces, their actions have not yet led to serious incidents.
In light of these developments, Wallace warned Russia against further hybrid attacks on the United Kingdom. 'To President Putin, I say: we see you, we see your activities concerning our cables and pipelines, and you must know that any attempt to damage them will be unacceptable and will have serious consequences,' the minister stressed.
Additionally, The Telegraph previously reported that the Russian frigate 'Admiral Grigorovich' accompanied two oil tankers, which are under British sanctions, through the English Channel. These actions further underscore the escalating situation in the region and may indicate Russia's intentions to continue its military operations in the Atlantic.
In light of these events, it is crucial for the United Kingdom and its allies to remain vigilant and prepared for potential challenges from Russia, which continues to demonstrate its military activity in strategically important regions.
