UK Observes Increased Russian Activity in the North Atlantic
The UK government has expressed serious concern over the rising activity of Russia in the northern part of the Atlantic. Defense Minister John Healey warned Moscow of potential severe consequences if Russia continues to threaten British underwater assets in the Atlantic Ocean.
The UK government has raised alarms regarding the escalating activity of Russian military forces in the northern Atlantic, prompting a stern warning from Defense Minister John Healey. He cautioned Moscow about the serious repercussions that could follow if it persists in threatening British underwater infrastructure in the Atlantic Ocean. This statement comes in response to recent military maneuvers by Russia, which Healey claims are aimed at conducting hybrid warfare against the UK and its allies.
Healey pointed out that British military forces have detected a Russian 'Shark'-class attack submarine along with two specialized submarines belonging to the Russian Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research. He also mentioned the sighting of the Russian reconnaissance ship 'Yantar' last November, indicating an uptick in Russian military operations in the region.
According to Healey, these vessels have received orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in hybrid warfare against the UK and its allies, particularly around critical underwater infrastructure. British military forces are actively monitoring these ships both at sea and in the air as part of a coordinated mission with allies. Notably, one of the submarines has already returned to Russia, suggesting that operations are ongoing.
Operations against Russian submarines, which involved over 500 British servicemen, lasted for more than a month and have recently concluded, the minister reported. He emphasized that there is currently no evidence indicating that Russian submarines in the Atlantic have caused damage to British underwater cables or pipelines. However, Healey warned Moscow against further hybrid attacks on the UK.
"To President Putin, I say: we see you, we see your activities regarding our cables and pipelines, and you must know that any attempt to damage them will be unacceptable and will have serious consequences," stressed the UK Defense Minister. This statement underscores London’s determination to protect its interests in the Atlantic and its readiness to respond to any threats posed by Russia.
Moreover, media reports indicate that a Russian frigate has been escorting tankers from a 'shadow fleet' that have been sanctioned by the UK as they pass through the English Channel. The Kremlin has described this as a 'protection against piracy,' which has raised further concerns in London. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also agreed that the armed forces and law enforcement agencies now have the authority to intercept vessels that are under British sanctions while transiting through UK waters.
