Middle East Must Not Divert Attention from War in Ukraine - Former Turkish NATO Representative

In a recent conversation with Ukrinform, former Turkish permanent representative to NATO, Ambassador Fatih Ceylan, expressed concern that the international community's focus has shifted towards events in the Middle East, particularly due to the war against Iran. He emphasized that this should not lead to a decrease in the prioritization of the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine.

Ceylan underscored that in a situation where two theaters of war—the eastern and southern fronts—are having a significant negative impact, it is crucial to understand that both conflicts will have direct consequences for the future architecture of European security. This architecture is still being formed, making it essential not to lose sight of the situation in Ukraine.

The expert noted that efforts to achieve a common ground for peace in Ukraine have not ceased and must continue. He also pointed out that the success or failure of the war against Iran will primarily matter for the United States and may influence negotiations regarding a peace agreement for Ukraine. These factors require careful analysis and consideration within the context of international relations.

Ceylan specifically highlighted the role of Europe and Turkey in resolving the war in Ukraine. He stressed that the responsibility for achieving a just peace for Ukraine lies primarily with European countries. This also entails active efforts from Turkey in seeking a 'European solution' that could satisfy all parties involved in the conflict.

The diplomat added that it would be prudent for Turkey to continue its attempts to facilitate an agreement between Ukraine and Russia, while not undermining the expectations of Kyiv. He emphasized that Turkey is already showing signs of active participation in this process, and any initiatives that take into account Ukraine's interests can count on support from Ankara.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern that the ongoing war between the United States and Israel against Iran could further weaken America's support for Ukraine. These remarks indicate that the situation in Ukraine remains a priority, despite other global conflicts.

Thus, it is vital for the international community to continue paying attention to the war in Ukraine and not allow other conflicts to distract from the necessity of supporting our country during this challenging time.
