Belarus Begins Supplying Russia with MZKT Chassis for Pantsir-S1 Air Defense System
Starting in 2024, Belarus has commenced the supply of specialized MZKT chassis for the new version of the Pantsir-S1 air defense system to Russia, according to reports from the military publication Militer. This initiative comes in the wake of an investigation by the Belarusian resource BelPol.
Beginning in 2024, Belarus has initiated the delivery of specialized MZKT chassis for the new version of the Pantsir-S1 air defense system to Russia. This information was reported by the military publication Militer, referencing an investigation conducted by the Belarusian resource BelPol.
According to the available information, this involves at least 18 MZKT-7930−312 platforms, which are intended to replace problematic bases on KamAZ vehicles. These new chassis, as noted by the publication, are expected to resolve longstanding technical issues that have plagued Russian Pantsir systems mounted on KamAZ chassis. Among the primary drawbacks of the previous base were low cross-country capability and the risk of overturning due to the high center of gravity of the combat module.
The report also indicates that the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant has committed to delivering 18 units of the new MZKT-7930−312 chassis to Russia. The new platform features several enhancements, including an armored cabin, a different windshield division, and improved stabilization during movement and deployment of the system.
Militer also highlights the combat module index that is integrated onto this chassis. According to the documents, this pertains to module 72V6.00.00.000−08, with the index 72V6 indicating a version of the Pantsir-S1 designed for the needs of the Russian Federation's army, rather than for export modifications or the upgraded Pantsir-S2.
Furthermore, the publication suggests that a portion of the contract may have already been fulfilled, and the equipment could have been utilized in the war against Ukraine. One of the indirect arguments presented is the previously struck Russian Pantsir in Mariupol, which exhibited the characteristic silhouette of the MZKT chassis and could initially have been mistakenly identified as a vehicle based on BAZ.
It is worth noting that Russia had previously considered MZKT chassis for certain export contracts for Pantsir systems; however, other platforms were also used for foreign customers. Now, as indicated by the BelPol investigation, Belarusian tractors are likely being integrated directly into Russian serial complexes for the war against Ukraine.
This situation underscores the close cooperation between Russia and Belarus in the defense sector, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the context of modern military conflicts. The supply of new MZKT chassis could significantly impact the effectiveness of Russian air defense systems, which, in turn, may affect the situation on the front lines in Ukraine.
