Barro Calls Hungary's Position a 'Betrayal of Solidarity' Within the EU
French Foreign Minister Clément Beaune expressed his concerns regarding Hungary's stance, labeling it a 'betrayal of solidarity,' a fundamental principle for European Union countries.
In a recent broadcast on Franceinter radio, French Foreign Minister Clément Beaune articulated his apprehension regarding Hungary's position within the European Union, calling it a 'betrayal of solidarity.' This solidarity is considered a cornerstone for EU member states, especially in times when the world is facing the emergence of new empires. Beaune emphasized that the unity of EU countries is crucial for maintaining their strength and influence on the international stage.
Beaune remarked, 'This is a betrayal of the demand for solidarity that should exist among European Union countries. If we want to be strong in a world where new empires are rising, we must be united. We may have differences, even strategic ones. But it is unity that must prevail; otherwise, we will become vassals, playthings of the empires we refuse to be.' His comments were in response to recent statements made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó regarding the content of confidential meetings in Brussels, which he disclosed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The French minister underscored that diplomatic meetings can take various forms, with or without advisors, but such disclosures, particularly those involving the Hungarian government, call into question the integrity of discussions among EU countries. 'It is clear that these revelations cast a shadow of doubt on the integrity of our discussions. That is why we urge Viktor Orbán not only to keep his word but also to respect the principle of solidarity,' Beaune added.
Simultaneously, while commenting on potential outcomes of the upcoming elections in Hungary, Beaune stressed that France 'does not accept any interference in its electoral processes and does not meddle in the affairs of other countries.' This statement highlights the importance of independence and sovereignty in national elections, which is a vital aspect of the democratic process.
It is worth noting that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó recently suggested to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov that they send a document concerning Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This proposal sparked outrage among several European leaders who believe that such actions contradict the principles of European integration and solidarity.
Furthermore, the Hungarian government has signed an agreement with Russia to expand economic, trade, energy, and cultural ties between the two countries. This agreement has also raised concerns among EU nations, which believe that Hungary should adhere to the common foreign policy of the European Union.
Amidst rising geopolitical challenges, such as the war in Ukraine and tensions between the West and Russia, the issues of solidarity and unity among EU countries are becoming increasingly pertinent. European leaders must find ways to overcome internal divisions and present a united front in response to external threats.
