On April 6, Ukraine celebrates an important event — the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. This holiday, although relatively new, has already become significant for the global community. The date of April 6 was chosen deliberately, as it is on this day that representatives of the United Nations decided to draw humanity's attention to the importance of sport in societal development and the creation of peaceful relations. Sport is not only a guarantee of health and well-being but also a means of uniting different nations around common goals.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was established in the summer of 2013 during a session of the UN General Assembly. The decision to celebrate this day was made unanimously, reflecting the importance of this initiative for the international community. Sport opens up vast opportunities for physical and moral development, reinforcing the values that the UN has championed for decades. Among these values are equality, justice, and mutual respect. As noted by UN representatives, sport is a powerful tool for spreading ideas of peace and positive social and economic development goals enshrined in the Millennium Declaration.

Today also marks significant historical events. On April 6, 2014, the war in Eastern Ukraine began, leading to numerous losses and suffering. This same day in 2022 was celebrated as the Day of Liberation of Chernihiv region from Russian occupiers, marking an important milestone in the struggle for Ukraine's independence.

Additionally, believers honor the memory of Saint Euthymius, Archbishop of Constantinople, and Saint Methodius, the teacher of the Slavs. Today marks the beginning of Holy Week of Great Lent, which is an important period for Christians.

Among other significant events that occurred on this day, we can note the 200th anniversary of the birth of French painter Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ukrainian prose writer and playwright Hryhorii Vasylovych Dobroskok (1876-1938), and the 80th anniversary of the birth of Ukrainian immunologist Mykola Ivanovych Lisyanyy (1946-2023).

April 6 is also rich in historical events. In 1917, the All-Ukrainian National Congress commenced its work, and in 1943, a rebellion by the Ukrainian police occurred in Kovel, resulting in the deaths of 18 German soldiers. In 1945, a massacre took place in the village of Horayets, leading to the extermination of the Ukrainian population. In 1992, the foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova signed a joint declaration to cease fire in the Dniester region, and in 1993, the Prague Stock Exchange began its operations.

In 2010, mass riots began in Kyrgyzstan, leading to a revolution. In 2014, Russians killed Stanislav Karachevskyi, marking the second casualty among the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Crimea. That same year, pro-Russian separatists seized the building of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, and in 2016, the Netherlands rejected Ukraine's association with the EU in a consultative referendum.

Saint Methodius, also known as the Thessalonian, was a Greek missionary and Archbishop of Great Moravia, born in 815 in Thessaloniki. Together with his brother Cyril, he created the Slavic alphabet and preached Christianity. Methodius became the Archbishop of Great Moravia and Pannonia, and his contribution to the development of Slavic culture and education is invaluable.

Today is also marked by certain folk omens. A windless day and a starry night predict a good harvest, while morning fog promises a dry remainder of April. Sunny weather forecasts a warm spring, and falling snow may indicate a good buckwheat harvest. Traditions prohibit breaking tree branches, littering, and refusing help.

Thus, April 6 is a day filled with both historical events and important celebrations, highlighting the significance of sport, culture, and the memory of important moments in Ukraine's history.
