Kyiv Post’s “Defenders Kitchen” reveals life 30 km from the front, where soldiers cook under fire, share raw stories and fight to keep a sense of normal life alive. Kyiv Post presents Defenders Kitchen, a documentary project filmed in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, just dozens of kilometers from Russian positions, showing what life looks like near the front line beyond combat. As the war continues, even brief moments of normalcy matter. Follow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official . In episode two of Defenders Kitchen , Hector Jiménez-Bravo travels with Kyiv Post closer to the front line, spending time with soldiers of the Khartia Brigade in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Inside a damaged building just kilometers from active fighting, cooking happens on a gas burner. A hot meal, conversation, and a short pause between missions. The team cooked alongside the soldiers, listened to their stories, and captured what life looks like beyond combat, in the quiet moments in between. Defenders Kitchen is not only about war, but about the life that continues despite it. It explores family bonds, couples serving together, and the hope of those who dream of rebuilding their homes in places like Kupiansk. At the center of the project is Hector Jiménez-Bravo, a Canadian-Ukrainian chef who has spent more than a decade building his life in Ukraine. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he has been traveling closer to the front line, supporting Ukrainian troops not as a soldier, but as a cook. The project is reported by Kyiv Post journalist Kateryna Zakharchenko, focusing on the human dimension of war through everyday moments. Khartia is currently looking for cooks to join the unit.
